Having recently come back to America after living in Korea for 3 years I get a lot of questions. I love the questions and I appreciate everyone’s interest in my journey, but then there comes the dumb questions.
I know people say that there’s never a dumb question but…THEY LIED.
Now this post is all in humor and maybe 10% annoyance, so if you’ve asked me these questions before don’t feel bad…well maybe just a little lol.
1.Which part of Korea did your live in NORTH or SOUTH?
Every time I hear this question I immediately lose respect for the person and have a hard time controlling myself from doing this.
Now I know half the people who ask this question are joking.
Though it’s not a very good/funny joke.
2.Why did you come back?
I’m sorry, I didn’t know I couldn’t come back to my own country filled with family, friends, my native tongue, my culture, the food my stomach has missed, career opportunities, etc.
I know when people ask this they don’t mean to come off jerky. Maybe if you worded it differently it might sound a little better.
3.Where were you again? CHINA/JAPAN/insert other Asian country I wasn’t in.
I know that some people can be a bit geography illiterate (so can I). And this has to do more specifically with people who somewhat know me. If you don’t know/remember where I was located, just ask!
P.S. I hope you really forgot and aren’t insinuating all Asian countries are the same. 😐
4.What language do they speak there?
Now imagine a nice conversation that goes something like this, take a turn for the worse…
Person: That’s awesome! It must have been wonderful to live there and be a part of their culture!
Me: Yes, it was amazing and I’m glad I got a chance to experience it!
Person: So what language do they speak in Korea?
Me (trying not to make this face —>😐) : …Korean
I kid you not, this has seriously happened many times. It’s hard to respond without this face –> 😐 or this face –> 😂. Though I understand some people might not know…for some countries it’s not rocket science.
5.Do you speak Korean?
Hmmm I would think after living there for 3 years, I’d be able to do a little something if not more.
Now like I said this post is just a humorous post. Do these questions “offend” me? Not really. But do they annoy me? Most of the time yes. It’s not the end of the world if I get asked these questions, but I could do without them sometimes! Honestly, in this specific case, it’s not what you say but HOW you say it!
