Today’s post is about lighting! You’ll definitely wanna read this post if you’re interested in taking nice/high quality pictures for your blog, website, or even Instagram!
When I first entered the blogging word, I didn’t know anything about lighting or taking pictures. I always had a pretty nice dslr camera that I got prior to going to Korea, and I took pics here or there but nothing special.
Once I started to take my blogging more seriously (pretty recently lol) I decided that if I wanted my blog to be taken seriously then I had to up the quality of everything.
I know there are already many posts on Google and YouTube about lighting, but mine is a very simple one that everyone will be able to understand!
Main 3 Types of Lighting
There are 3 main types of lighting that most people use: umbrella lights, soft box lights, and ring lights.
These lights are probably the most simple and cheapest lights known to world. You guys probably remember seeing these lights when you would have to take the awkward but parent approved school photos. They are very reasonably priced and Amazon and eBay have many “kits” with some even coming with backdrops and the stand. The umbrellas help aluminate the lights in a natural manner, the pictures usually come out looking soft, with the background filled with light as well.
Out of the three, these lights are the most similar to umbrella lights. They are pretty much boxs of light lol, that direct the light through a type of diffusing material. The pictures still come out nice, but with a little more focus on the subject than the background.
I had planned on going with the umbrella lights, they were easy and a little bit cheaper than the softboxes. That was until I discovered the heaven sent ring light…
While researching lights I came upon the ring light. I didn’t really know much about them, except for the fact that most beauty/makeup gurus rave about them. After doing my research I completely fell in love!
Ring lights can be veryyy expensive. I was lucky to find a very decent priced package that even came with the stand for the light (they usually don’t). I got the 14 inch Neewer brand. I’ve been using it for almost a month now and I loveee it! It’s everything I wanted and more!
I suggest you search eBay/Amazon for the “Neewer ring light kit”/”Ring light kit”, that’s what I did. If you don’t get the kit you will have to buy the stand separately. It’s just easier to get everything altogether.
There is a LED version (which I have) and the fluorescent one. I’ve heard there is not that much difference between the two. With me being the most clumsiest person in the world, I definitely prefer not having to worry about breaking $30 bulbs.
I had planned to go all DIY and make my own backdrop stand but I was just too lazy, so I also ordered that online. It even came with black and white backdrop cloths. I’ll talk about backdrops more in a future post. I will say that once you buy a backdrop, you might start thinking you’re a model lol.
The quality of my pictures has definitely improved tremendously! I’m not a professional photographer, but thanks to the light I may be getting there lol.
There are probably some people who don’t like ring lights and might prefer some of the other ones. As long as you do your research, I’m sure you’ll find the light that is right for you!
