Red lipstick is one of my absolute favorite must have accessories, but a few years ago you would have never caught me wearing it. I felt like it was too vibrant, would not flatter my skin tone, and would make me look old lol. Little did I know, I would learn not only to like it but to love it!
I was so excited a few weeks ago when my Mac Ruby Woo came! I couldn’t wait to try it out. I have many different red toned lipsticks and lip stains, but this was my first matte lipstick. Usually I use cream based lipsticks, but I thought the two couldn’t be that much different. I knew matte was a bit more chalky and dry, but I did not know it would be a whole new ball park. 🙁
I was running late to meet a friend and I had just finished my makeup minus my lips. I decided to try my new lipstick. I thought I could just rush and put it on quickly, but it was to no avail…I failed miserably. I hadn’t prepared my lips so it was going on very dry and not spreading evenly. I felt like I had made a huge mistake and wished I had just stuck with the usual cream lipstick.
After talking to my friend (thanks Athena), she told me that you should always prep your lips before using any matte lipstick, by using chapstick and even brushing your lips. It made a lot of sense. I didn’t know why I hadn’t thought of those things beforehand, but I decided to put my red lipstick on the back burner for awhile.
Fast forward a few weeks later and I decide to give it a go.
-First I started with brushing my lips (with my tooth brush) to get any dead skin off that would get in the way of my lipstick going on evenly.
-Second I used my new Norwegian formula Neutrogena lip moisturizer (but any kind of chapstick is fine). This is one of the best chapsticks I have ever used! It leaves your lips feeling super soft and moisturized in smooth non sticky way.
-Third and finally I applied my lipstick. After prepping your lips the lipstick should go on super easily and you should have no problem getting that beautiful and smooth look. 🙂
